MANKATO, Minn. - Terry Liggins and Emma Erickson of the USD track and field teams won national titles at the Division II Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Mankato, Minn.
For just the third time in school history (1998, 2001, 2008), USD had two individual national champions at nationals. Erickson is the fifth women's indoor champion while Liggins is the fifth men's indoor titlist. Overall, USD now has had 17 indoor or outdoor individual national champions.
Liggins earned his fifth career All-American honor and his first national title at USD. A senior from Omaha, Neb., Liggins clocked a time of :07.84 in the 60-meter hurdles which breaks his own school record of :07.94. Liggins is the first athlete in USD and North Central Conference history to earn All-American honors in the 60-meter hurdles in all four years of competition.
Erickson, a freshman from Gayville, S.D., won the women's 800-meter run with a clocking of 2:09.57, which is just off her own school record of 2:09.30. Erickson earned three All-American honors at the championships as she also was a member of the distance medley relay which finished second (Friday) and the 4x400-meter relay which placed fifth.
The Coyote women's team finished sixth in the women's team race with 36 points. It is the second highest finish by the Coyotes at the indoor nationals.
The South Dakota women's team had a total of six All-American performances (two relays, four individual) at nationals.
The Coyote men's team finished with four All-American honors. Besides Liggins, junior Dominic Artis was seventh in the 200-meter dash in 22:05. Artis earned his first career All-American honor.
