United States Congresswomen Stephanie Herseth (D-S.D.) responded to the claim that North Korea had tested a nuclear weapon saying, "It's a very dangerous situation that North Korea continues to escalate throughout that region of the world and of course its effects on the international community."

Herseth, who is currently campaigning in South Dakota to retain her seat in Congress says the six party talks are "the best diplomatic vehicle available" and that sanctions will be necessary.

"I do believe that there will be support at the United Nations for limited economic sanctions," said Herseth. "What's so unfortunate about that of course is the people of North Korea suffer even more than they have under this dictatorship, under this current regime."

Herseth went on to say that she feels the U.N. will move forward with sanctions in the next day or so.

The United Nations has already condemned the action and President Bush has denounced the test as "unacceptable".
