Construction: Kraus-Anderson submits extension request

USD students may have to wait longer than expected to see the completion of the Muenster University Center.

Kraus-Anderson Construction, the company contracted to build the new student center, has submitted a request for an extension of the original completion deadline to the South Dakota Office of the State Engineer, according to state Project Engineer Gordon Hollenbeck.

Court refuses to hear student loan case

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A federal appeals court has refused to reinstate a lawsuit that sought to strike down a law denying federal financial aid to college students convicted of drug offenses.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of an organization representing students who lost eligibility for college loans, argued the law violates the constitutional ban on double jeopardy because it subjects students to a second criminal punishment after they have already served a court-imposed sentence.

In just two short years at USD, Jeana Hoffman has seen her share of highs and lows. In a year in which she has experienced both extremes, she has placed herself in the conversation of top players in USD women's basketball history.

After breaking her left wrist in two places in the North Central Conference Tournament her junior year, Hoffman was forced to sit and watch as the Coyote women fell in the first round of the regional tournament.

Curtain closes on Coyotes' long-time home

For 86 years, the Coyotes were a part of the NCC. It was announced on Nov. 28, 2006, that the NCC would discontinue after the 2007-2008 season, thus ending the Coyote era in the storied league.

Maybe you heard, the student-run consignment store, Charlie's Closet, is closing its doors. Reason: lack of business. This is unfortunate, considering its prime location on Center Street, right in the heart of downtown Vermillion.

Charlie's Closet is just off Main, but is no doubt passed by a majority of the student population many days and nights of the week while heading to and from the bars and other services located downtown.

Skateboarding: What a crime!

The April 16 issue of The Volante had an interesting article discussing the stereotypical image of the skateboarder and the 'lifestyle' associated with this activity. I was a bit shocked to hear that skateboarding is not only frowned upon, but prohibited on USD campus.

Here on campus, somebody tied inane signs reading "hug me" to tree trunks while others sang Kumbaya on the old ice rink. But nothing really happened.

Our little blue marble was still dirtier after Earth Day than it was the day before. Cars still put more carbon in the air, Exxon still dumped more oil into the sea and our freshmen still threw away more plastic six-pack holders without cutting the rings.

According to this message there was an excessive display of police presence, including more than fifty police cars, snipers and riot gear, all for a nonviolent protest of a few dozen standing in a ditch.
