MUC offers food, study spots, entertainment

After two years of construction, the Muenster University Center opened in February 2009 and the USD campus hasn’t been the same since. Sophomore Alyssa Day goes to the MUC daily, and said she wishes it had been open during her freshman year. “It gives campus a different atmosphere,” she said. “You feel much more connected to everyone else.” Full story

Local bars have more to offer than just booze

With every year, the question arises for all college students come Friday and Saturday night: What is there to do? For many, the answer includes a stop at one of the many local bars around town. But many students, especially freshmen and sophomores, are nowhere near the legal drinking age.

Knudson’s dedication leads her to USD

Glory, tradition and success are the words which have fueled McKayla Knudson during her time at South Sioux City High School. Now those same three words will drive her to success as a Coyote. As a young girl, Knudson was not fond of the idea of playing basketball. “I started in first grade and I absolutely hated it,” Knudson said. “I really wanted to quit.”   Full story

Now if the stiudents would just quit puking in front of the bars on the sidewalks--it would be a pretty main street.

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Missing the old Vermillion
the reason there is basically nothing in this town is because the city fatheres didn't want anything to come into town for many years. Many years ago Gateway wanted to come to Vermillion--they wouldn't let them in. Gateway has cut back on employees now--but think of the revenue it would have brought in for many years. There are two business in Beresford that wanted to come to Vermillion--again they weren't allowed. They are going strong and very successful in Beresford. I though it was really something terrable when they actually had an election for Wal Mart to come in--I could not believe that people didn't want another business in town. All the hue and cry on main street about Wal mart would close down the business already here. None of them closed down. Pamida wouldn't compete with prices and they (along with a lot of other Pamida stores) closed down. Vermillion has a lot of houses sitting empty and either for rent or sale--just sitting for a long time. Now the University is building their "palace" on Rose Street. That will put many landlords out of business. Not to mention the people that lost their homes in the mobile home park that was sold to the college. I can't see where the University has been so good for Vermillion. The University has their own well and electrical plants and phone service, etc. So they pay nothing in the form of utilities into the city. No property tax either. they supplied minimum wage--if that--people to work in the small stores, people that live here and do pay property taxes most generally work out of town to make a living. Vermillion city fathers neesd to look long and hard about getting business and industry into Vermillion or dry up and blow away! They need to get away from the old attitude that "we have our college -we don't need any thing else".

  • COLUMNIST: Thune is unopposed? Really?
If there were a Republican opponent in the primary, I'd vote for the opponent.

Without a candidate running against him, Thune cannot use his vast war chest to support other Republican candidates in this state which is a benefit to the Democrats.

Are all of the parents of VHS students so judgmental? "She should've had an abortion" is so disturbing. Regardless of your personal views on abortion, it was Chelsea's choice. It's none of your busines if she decided to reproduce. Also, the comments about "mileage' are so stupid. Women (including Chelsea) are human beings, not cars. Men may 'expect" sex? Some women expect sex from men they're dating, too.I'm not condoning premarital sex as a Christian. I'm just asking for some intelligence.

    SIOUX CITY IOWA poster-

Wow, you are incredibly judgmental. I personally am 24 years old, only had sex with one person (my husband!) and have been on birth control since i was 13 due to having Dysmenorrhea. Hate to tell you, but generally people's personal beliefs have a lot more to do with if they'll have sex early than access to birth control. Birth control has SEVERAL positive uses besides protecting from pregnancy, and it doesn't make anyone turn into some uncontrollable sex fiend. I am personally insulted that someone would assume that if you have access to birth control, you're going to "BE OFF THE CHARTS WITH MILAGE BY THE TIME SHE IS IN HER TWENTIES!!". Grow up. People are going to be having sex regardless of if they have birth control, they might as well be safe about it.

Also, you say she needs support- clearly her father is supporting her and being a great parent, but these awful comments you post are anything but. I hope that if you were ever in this situation you'd be more supportive of your own child, rather than preaching your beliefs as if they are facts.
