Main Street Pub is one of the many bars located in downtown Vermillion.

With every year, the question arises for all college students come Friday and Saturday night: What is there to do?

For many, the answer includes a stop at one of the many local bars around town.

But many students, especially freshmen and sophomores, are nowhere near the legal drinking age.

However, some embrace college students, especially those with a combined restaurant.
One, just seven miles east of Vermillion, is Whimp’s Bar and Grill in the small town of Burbank, S.D.

“Being more of a restaurant helps,” manager Carol Kruse said. “Having more Spaghetti Nights, they can play pool and we’ll feed them.”

Kruse added that another reason for the success is the fact that many of the employees are also students at USD.

“All my waitresses work up at the college and they all ask a friend of a friend of a friend to come down,” Kruse said. “Word of mouth has really helped.”

The most popular deal offered among college students, Kruse added, is the Thursday night spaghetti nights which offer patrons unlimited spaghetti for only $4.50.

There is also a wide assortment of other American dishes offered for reasonable prices daily.

For those who want to stay within walking distance of their dorms, Pro’s Bar and Grill on Dakota Street, just a couple blocks northwest of the university, offers more than just food and drinks.

Attached to the Prairie Inn is a 12-lane bowling alley called Prairie Lanes that hosts frequent university bowling events.

In the restaurant, patrons can take advantage of the many specials offered throughout the week such as 25-cent wing Wednesdays and $4.95 lunch specials all week long.
