Move in with comfort

Veterans of the college move-in experience are willing to share the most important things they used on campus in their freshman year.

Housing Director Kyle Greene said every hall has items available for check out, such as vacuums, mops, cooking supplies,  games, sports equipment, tools and fly swatters. He said any incoming student that is curious about what they can and cannot bring to college can find a list in the online version of the “At Home in the Halls” book.

When packing for college, practical items can be just as important as sentimental and non-material ones, like family pictures and an open state of mind.

Freshman Erin Zink said everyone should make sure to pack a microwave, their favorite pillow to add a homey touch, pictures of family and friends, something sentimental and most importantly, an open mind.

“If you’re not open to new experiences and things, your overall experience is very limited,” Zink said.

Making the room as comfortable as possible can be important to the adjustment to college life and allow students a place to invite new friends and be able to reflect on life.

Senior Jonathan Rarrot has had several years’ experience moving in to new dorms around campus and said the most important thing is a couch because it provides relaxation opportunities. Rarrot’s other piece of advice is to pack light and leave surplus at home.

“Don’t bring excess clothing because it is a crowded environment. Clothing that isn’t worn everyday should be left at home because it fills closets quickly,” Rarrot said.

Though she does not live in the dorms anymore, junior Jenna Daley said a vital object she had was her laptop because it allowed her to work on homework in her room and not have to go to the library.

For other packing, Daley said she would recommend a checklist so students do not forget items like shower supplies.

“Remember the things you use on a daily basis. And shower shoes, that’s important,” Daley said.
