From home cooked meals to dorm food, Vermillion offers a change in menu with many dining establishments located in and around town.
Vermillion offers different types of restaurants, City Manager John Prescott said. The town has the fast food as well as nice dining, he said.
Known as “Vermillion’s Best Pizza,” R-Pizza sits in the heart of downtown Vermillion on the corner of Main and Court Streets. The gourmet pizza and sandwich shop has been serving Vermillion for over 35 years. Open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. the restaurant offers a Web site (r-pizza.com) with a full menu and free delivery.
Located in Jones’ Food Center, Mister Smith’s bakery was given the “Best bakery in the country” award by O Magazine in September 2002.
Mister Smith’s employee Tony Belk said with Subway being the only competition, the soup and sandwiches Mister Smith’s offers give more flavor and there are more sandwich options.
Only three blocks from campus, Belk said many don’t see it walking by since it is inside Jones’ Food Center, but once somebody tries a sandwich they usually come back.
Mister Smith’s is open 6 a.m. until 9 p.m., seven days a week.
As an eloquent, modern Chinese restaurant, Chae’s restaurant brings character to downtown Vermillion, owner Jessi Wilharm said. Serving both Chinese and Korean food, Wilharm said spicy food lovers enjoy the variety of dishes on the menu. With homemade crab rangoon, Chae’s offers a noon buffet that allows many to test the menu over the lunch hour.
“It’s not like anything else,” Wilharm said. “If they want something other than chain-Asian restaurants, this would be something different than the ordinary.”
Amidst the bars and walking distance from the movie theaters, Chae’s is open from 11a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
Only seven miles east on Highway 50, Whimp’s Place prides itself on good food and friendly, hard-working help, owner Carol Kruse said. Located in Burbank, S.D., the restaurant offers hand-cut steaks everyday, roasted chicken and a big menu.
“It’s a good place to bring parents freshmen year,” Kruse said. “It’s a nice place to spend time and get out of town.”
With an all you can eat spaghetti night Thursdays for $4.95, Kruse said many sororities and fraternities have parties there every year.
Whimp’s Place is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Offering the town’s bowling alley to students, Pro’s Bar and Grill also has banquet rooms, karaoke Thursday nights and two-for-one burgers. Pro’s Manager Brett Riggs said Pro’s offers the best wings in town, with Wing Wednesdays, steak specials every night, bowling leagues and open bowling.
“It’s a fun place to be to avoid the downtown area,” Riggs said. “You can come and talk with friends without having to worry about loud music and too many people.”
Located across from the DakotaDome on Dakota Street, Riggs said they will offer the television package NFL ticket this fall.
Pro’s is open from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Mondays and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday-Sunday. The grill is open until 10 p.m. every night and the bowling alley is open 4 p.m. to midnight during the week and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the weekends.
Vermillion has many restaurants downtown that are independently owned to local restaurants like Cherry Street Grill, Prescott said. The locations are spread out around town so people can explore the community. Raziel’s, Mona Lisi, The Roadhouse, Mexico Viejo, Recuerdo’s Mexican Restaurant and many other restaurants are located throughout Vermillion.
