PIERRE - State senators killed a bill that would allow students to carry firearms on public university campuses Thursday in Pierre. State Senator Ben Nesselhuf of Vermillion cast one of 25 votes against the bill.

“I would say we have a bigger stake in this than any other community in South Dakota simply given the size of our university compared to the size of our town,” Nesselhuf said. “I took this bill very personally.”

Several USD students attended the session and many cheered as the result of the vote was read.

Medical student Jordan Ochsner said he was pleased with the bill’s failure and said that he was opposed to the idea of a campus where students were allowed to carry firearms.

“That’s not a safe environment for students and I think a safe environment should come first,” Ochsner said.
