Incoming freshmen get first pick of fall courses

Incoming freshmen will have registration priority over returning students for the fall semester as a result of the admission department’s decision to move the first Fast Track program of the year to March 15.

The Fast Track program, a designated day on campus for high school seniors who plan on attending USD to register for classes and get acquainted with campus, has typically been held in the early summer.

Jeff Baylor, acting vice president of marketing and student services, said the schedule change was a marketing strategy to help with recruitment numbers.

Students who get engaged early on in their education, he said, are more likely to succeed in college.

“We do a lot of things when students get here to get them acclimated and to help them with the transition from high school to college and what we’re trying to do is start that transition sooner,” Baylor said.

Junior Liz Lizarazo said she doesn’t like the idea of people who aren’t even technically in college yet having first dibs on classes.

“Seniority rules. We’ve been here longer and we have less time left to complete graduation requirements,” she said. “It just makes more sense that upperclassmen should get to choose first.

Stephen Ward, interim director for the academic advising center, said returning students’ needs were taken into consideration when making the schedule change.

“We are really going to make every effort to make sure we don’t fill up any sections,” he said. “The last thing we want to do is put a hardship on current students.”

Though exact figures have not been decided on, Ward said an artificial cap will be set for the amount of incoming freshmen allowed to register for one class on the first Fast Track day.

“We are going to leave lots of room in all the sections,” he said.

Despite the positive intentions of the early Fast Track date and the effort to keep sections available to returning students, Lizarazo said she still doesn’t support the change.

“I think the idea is kind of absurd,” she said.

Provost Chuck Staben said Fast Track serves a larger purpose than just getting students registered for classes. Fast Track also gets students familiarized with their new home, campus.

Having students come see campus in March as opposed to the summer should entice more students to attend college at USD.

“We don’t have a lot of students here during the summer, when we typically have our fast track program. I think campus is much more active of a place in March than it is in June,” he said.

This is a very stupid idea! I am working on getting my classes in order for next semester and I can't register for a majority of them because they are already full and I am sophmore so I should have no problem registering for these classe but I am. Upperclassmen should be able to register for classes before incoming students. I know alot of people that will be in the same boat as me cause they need the same classes that i do but they won't get in either. I am really considering transferring and going to another school where I won't have to put up with things like this.

This is a bad policy. Why can't freshman register in April after everyone else has?

Chelsea H--It doesn't matter that they are incoming students and will not be taking upper level courses, for they are still receiving priority over current students who will be taking some of the same classes as them (for example, current freshmen). This is a bad idea and it hurts current students who have earned the right to register first.

When USD looks to $$ over students, nobody benefits.

Not necessarily, Chelsey - I know quite a few people who waited until they were seniors to do their generals - a risk yes, but one they have a right to make. Also, some classes are only offerred once a year, so if I can't get it in the fall, I have to wait til the next fall. There were a few classes I had to wait a couple years to take because the ones I wanted/had to take were at the same time, once a year, so I did have to wait a couple years to get them all in. Many of those classes are ones that incoming freshman could take. Yes, it wouldn't happen to a lot, but quite a few upperclassmen could be set back. Like the 2nd anonymous said, I just get sick of USD bending over backward to get you in, then treat you like crap the rest of your time at USD.

Everyone needs to calm down. Remember, they're freshmen. They won't be signing up for upper level classes so you really don't have to worry about "putting graduation off a semester." It's really not going to affect you in anyway unless you're either a freshman this year or a second year freshman. Take a breath, it'll be okay.

This is one of the stupidest ideas that USD has come up with so far. I mean I've only been here for 2 years but this school keeps getting worse and worse. Current students have paid so much in tuition and ridiculous fees but care more about students that haven't paid a dime yet. Current students deserve the right to register first because we after all have paid tuition. Everytime I read something new that this school has done something yet again without considering their current students I feel that this school is waste. I want to go see those students attending fast track and tell them how horrible current students are treated here. They should know what school is REALLY like here before they decide to enroll here. They should know what it is like to be a student here and know that once they start paying in their opinions and needs won't matter anymore.

Just goes to show you that USD cares more about getting students that keeping students. You've spent all that money on tuition and all their other ridiculous fees, and they would rather make the people who haven't even spent a dime yet.

Don't worry though, you will be important to them again after you graduate. Then they will call you like crazy trying to get even more money from you.

I agree, this is a stupid idea. Signing up for classes doesn't really count as engaging early. My idea of engagin early has something to do with actually doing something that deals with the subject matter of the class. All this is going to do is mess up the upperclassmen's schedules. I'd be mad if this would be the reason I would have to put my graduation off a semester. I'm sick of USD bending over backward for the incoming students and not giving a rat's behind about them the next 3+ years.

stupid idea. being able to sign up for classes a few months earlier will not impact a students success in college. furthermore, even if they say they will try not to let classes fill, it still puts upperclassmen at a disadvantage which is completely unfair seeing as we have already spent thousands of dollars here. cost saving idea for the current budget crunch: take whoever came up with this idea off the payroll.
