For the second year in a row, students at the USD medical school are putting on a benefit concert to raise money for a good cause. This year the funds raised will go toward juvenile diabetes research.

Mary Baker, second-year medical student, said the event, organized by a small group of medical students, was such a success the first time, it only made sense to do it again.

“We were blown away because we didn’t know how well we would do, so we decided we better give it another shot,” Baker said.

The first concert raised $2,500 for a scholarship created in a former USD medical school professor’s name.

The night of instrumentals and songs, all performed by students from the medical school, will be held at Farber Hall, Saturday March 20 at 7:30 p.m..

Second-year medical student Niel Burns is the man who conceived the idea of a benefit concert. Having two classmates who have type one diabetes, Burns said the topic of diabetes hits close to home and doing something to help the cause is the right thing to do.

“It something that’s near and dear to most of the medical students’ hearts and even though we know so much about it, we don’t have a cure for it yet,” he said.

Chris Stampe, one of Burns’ two diabetic classmates, said he is honored his friends and colleagues are taking the time to help support the search for a diabetes cure.

“It was actually kind of a surprise. They’ve been doing a lot of fundraising and it’s a really nice gesture,” he said.
