USD’s Native American Law Students Association has been named the 2010 Chapter of the Year.
The group received the award at the 35th annual Indian Law Conference earlier this month in Santa Fe.
NALSA was given the award for their work serving as hosts for the National NALSA Moot Court Competition, pro bono work with the Indian Wills Project, organizing a food drive to benefit the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and coordinating a toy drive for children of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
Lonnie Wright, a second-year law student at USD, was also elected president of NALSA at the April 8 and 9 Indian Law Conference.
He was elected by members from law schools across the United States.
Wright is a former graduate of South Dakota School of Mines and
Technology in Rapid City, S.D., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. He also served as the president of the SDSM&T American Indian Science and Engineering Society president.
NALSA is a national student organization comprised of 34 local chapters from across the country.
