South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds will celebrate Arbor Day a few days early on Tuesday with a tree planting event at the Governor’s Residence near Capitol Lake in Pierre, S.D.

Celebrated on the last Friday in April, the April 30 nationally-celebrated observance encourages overall tree planting and care.

Founded by J. Sterling Mortin in 1872, Morton proclaimed the holiday at a meeting of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture. Arbor day was officially proclaimed by Nebraska Governor Robert W. Furnas on March 12, 1874.

In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day.
