USD’s Student Government Association discussed, at their weekly Tuesday night meeting, plans for a memorial that would honor students who die while enrolled at the university.
SGA President Tim Carr expressed interest in allocating SGA funds to support the construction of the memorial.
“In the past we’ve had a plaque,” Carr said. “The idea is to do something a little more visible.”
The senate considered the idea of a bronze statue of a coyote to be placed somewhere visible on campus. The idea was first proposed earlier this semester.
Although Carr acknowledged it would be an expensive undertaking, he believes a significant contribution to the project on the part of SGA would encourage a great deal of outside donation.
The senate invited Larry Schou, dean of Fine Arts, to participate in Tuesday’s discussion. Schou expressed support for the idea of a bronze statue, encouraging the senate to commission a USD student or
former student to sculpt the statue.
Carr said he hopes the statue will both honor the students who have died and their families while also serving as a symbol of pride at the university.
