Student Government Association senator Trevor Christiansen proposed a resolution for USD to build a new permanent veteran’s memorial on campus during this week’s SGA meeting.

“There are other universities which have veteran’s memorials,” Christiansen said. “I think there’s been a greater awareness of the sacrifices World War II veterans and veterans of all the other generations have made.”

Christiansen said while many details are still being worked out, the memorial would be dedicated to all American veterans. The proposal comes on the heels of a bill to build a memorial dedicated to fallen USD students. SGA President Tim Carr said while he supports a veteran’s memorial, he’d rather see the two ideas combined.

“I support (having a lasting memorial for veterans),” Carr said. “What I tend to favor is, rather than having two memorials, having one memorial that honors USD students and would serve as a memorial for veterans as well.”

Carr and Christiansen said the proposal would be further discussed at next week’s meeting.

This week’s meeting also covered controversies surrounding a protest aimed at the USD Veteran’s Club’s flag display.
