USD’s Student Government Association met with Joe Reed, the university’s student legal aid attorney, to discuss renewal of his contract, which expires this year.

Reed said USD students frequently use his services and that he enjoys his role on campus.

“I’m there for the students that need me,” Reed said. “I provide a buffer between them and law enforcement and the state’s attorney’s office.”

Reed told the senate he typically represents an average of 50 students each semester, in addition to several minor consultations.

Reed is an independent contractor employed by SGA. He is not affiliated with the university itself.

SGA allocated $20,000 in its budget this year for Reed’s services.

SGA President Tim Carr said he will review Reed’s contract renewal and likely sign it within the week. He added that Reed provides his services to students at a rate that is well below market value.

“It’s certainly a service that students use,” Carr said. “Based on that I don’t foresee any reason that we wouldn’t renew the contract.”

The senate also approved the allocation of $290 to fund the student athlete advisory committee and approved the appointment of their adviser, Kirsten Compary, to two senate committees.
