Dear Federal Communications Commission,

It’s time to abolish the rating system for television shows. This system rates every TV show based on how appropriate it is for kids. It has two main flaws. The first is accuracy. The FCC seems to have judged sexual content as more dangerous than violence. What other explanation is there for violent, though amusing shows like “Dragonball Z,” getting a TV-Y7 rating (for kids seven and older) but shows that make vague mentions to sex receive a TV-14 rating. Isn’t violence more worrisome than sex?

Furthermore, these ratings stifle creativity. For those who remember the Nickelodeon cartoons from the early 90s, watch some episodes, or think back, and a few things come to mind. A lot of those shows, “Rocko’s Modern Life” in particular, were extremely suggestive, but harmless. Sure there were naughty allusions such as Rocko’s hobby of jacking (jack hammering), but how many of us as young kids really understood what that meant? More importantly, those shows were superior to what children watch today. Have you ever watched Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network on a Saturday? All they have is the poorly acted “iCarly” or the banality of the “Misadventures of Flapjack.”

There used to be good kids shows on TV, before parents and the FCC overreacted. If a show has a few adult jokes, kids aren’t going to understand them and even if they do, it’s not the end of the world. Bring back the clever, slightly raunchy shows of yesteryear instead of the sterile, homogenized programs they air now.

Sincerely,
Taylor Poro
