On April 20, 2010 USD freshman Patrick Linsenmeyer, a member of the student organization, Students Against the State, created two signs protesting a memorial set up by the USD Veterans Club. Linsenmeyer placed the signs within the bounds of the memorial, violating USD policy. The signs were eventually removed by Craig Linsenmeyer, a member of the USD Veterans Club. The next day, a letter to the editor written by the SATS faculty adviser Robert Swan was published in The Volante. The letter which had been submitted to The Volante the previous Friday, defended SATS. Although he had no connection with Linsenmeyer's actions, Swan was widely criticized for his sentiments and his affiliation with SATS. The next morning, Swan's home was vandalized. Vermillion Police Chief Art Mabry said there is no evidence linking the vandalism to Swan's letter. An investigation into the vandalism is currently being undertaken by the Vermillion Police Department.
